Hohenemser Memoir

Memoir/Personal History

Client: Anne Hohenemser

Born in Germany in 1935, Anne Hohenemser soon found herself on a boat steaming across the Atlantic with her family, fleeing Nazi persecution and likely condemnation to death camps. Not speaking a word of English on her arrival to the United States, she eventually became a middle school art teacher, an accomplished potter, the wife of a fellow German immigrant, and a mother of two. A lover of art and music and a dedicated champion of social justice, she wanted to tell her story and leave behind a lasting legacy for her friends and four grandchildren. With the help of her daughters, some friends, and an editor, Anne wrote the narrative herself and assembled a rich trove of photographs and memorabilia that beautifully accompanies the text. The design for this memoir is intentionally simple and uncluttered, giving the story and images space to beckon the reader. Please scroll down to see examples of inside spreads.
